Description

Guess what has been taking up all of my time! That's right, this guy. ^

One of the biggest challenges I came across while working on this piece was the fear of opportunity cost. Which led to procrastination via Netflix. Story of my life.
This fear curses me regularly, especially when I'm invested in a particular piece. I worry that this cool thing I can do will make this other cool thing impossible and/or this idea here would completely ruin everything. Then, without fail, I jump in and think "oh my gosh I'm ruining everything why does anyone let me anywhere near paint?" as I commit to a thought. Then I finish and step back and realize that I didn't completely ruin my work.
Several really cool people (and now me) have said that artists improve the most when they make mistakes and move on. There was a study done in a ceramics class where one half of the class was graded on quality and the other was graded on quantity. At the end of the study, the students with the best work were the ones for whom quantity was prized over quality.
Fumbling and making mistakes is a part of learning. A part of growing. It shouldn't be surprising that it is also a part of creating artwork.
All that being said, sometimes I get invested and forget that, x number of years from now, I'll look at this and think "what was I thinking why did anyone ever let me even touch paints back then?"
Answer: Because making mistakes is a part of growing.
